(SASKATCHEWAN, June 4, 2019) Camp fYrefly Saskatchewan has now opened summer registration to offer leadership and life skills to Saskatchewan LGBTQ2S (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Two Spirit) youth, aged 14-24.  This is the eleventh year of the camp in Saskatchewan and it runs August 15-18 in Saskatoon.

Every Camp fYrefly Saskatchewan since its first year of operation in 2009 has been full. This year, youth will experience an intense and exciting weekend of programs and workshops delivered by volunteers, including local professionals, community leaders, educators, and artists, focused on personal development, team building, dealing with adversity, and leadership skills. Not only will they enjoy themselves, but they will learn a lot and come away stronger in knowing who they are. For four days each year, Camp fYrefly Saskatchewan creates that world, a world that lives out the fYrefly acronym, which stands for: fostering, Youth, resiliency, energy, fun, leadership, yeah!

In addition, Camp fYrefly Saskatchewan is excited to announce that they have partnered with OUTSaskatoon, Saskatoon’s LGBTQ2S community centre. This partnership will allow Camp fYrefly to continue offering its annual leadership retreat for gender and sexually diverse youth from across Saskatchewan, while linking youth with OUTSaskatoon’s programs:

“Camp fYrefly Saskatchewan is all about helping youth grow, learn resilience, and be the best they can be.  Partnering with OUTSaskatoon enhances our reach and makes a difference for our youth, ” Jackie Morley, Chair, Camp fYrefly Saskatchewan Committee, Saskatoon.

"OUTSaskatoon and fYrefly have partnered to deliver education in schools across the province for the last two years. This move deepens this partnership and provides opportunity to bring the communities and stakeholders of both organizations together in ensuring that LGBTQ2S youth have access to high quality and comprehensive education, camp programming, and year-round services." Rachel Loewen Walker, Executive Director, OUTSaskatoon.

Over the past 10 years, Camp fYrefly Saskatchewan has provided over 400 youth with a four-day oasis of discovery, learning, and safety. Additionally, over the past five years, OUTSaskatoon and fYrefly in Schools have educated over 12,000 students, and OUTSaskatoon’s youth groups have had more than 3,800 visits. Both organizations have a rich history of delivering essential services to LGBTQ2S youth, and this partnership will amplify these services, ensuring that LGBTQ2S youth in the province can flourish.

Camp fYrefly Saskatchewan is also delighted to welcome back the Saskatchewan Roughriders this year.  The Saskatchewan Roughriders are part of a North American program endorsed by many sports organizations including the CFL, called You Can Play, which is dedicated to ensuring equality, respect and safety for all athletes, without regard to sexual orientation.

Registration forms are available on the Camp fYrefly Saskatchewan website: www.usask.ca/education/fyrefly.  There is a small registration fee of $25 to make the Camp accessible to all, but all costs are covered, which include four days of workshops, accommodations, and meals. Travel bursaries are available in some circumstances. The deadline to register for Camp fYrefly Saskatchewan is June 24.

Camp fYrefly Saskatchewan and fYrefly in Schools acknowledges the support of its tremendous sponsors and supporters:  Government of Saskatchewan; SaskPower; TD Canada Trust; University of Saskatchewan – College of Education; University of Alberta; Saskatchewan Roughriders; ISMSS; and Canadian Teachers Federation.

All donations, grants, and sponsorships for Camp fYrefly Saskatchewan will now be processed by OUTSaskatoon, and will be eligible for tax deductible donations, as requested. OUTSaskatoon’s commitment to financial accountability and transparency will ensure that all funds directed toward Camp fYrefly Saskatchewan and/or fYrefly in Schools will be used as requested.  As it costs over $400 to send one youth to camp, we thank you for your continued support of the health and well-being of Saskatchewan’s LGBTQ2S youth.
