Ben was born and raised in Saskatchewan on Treaty 6 land and Territory. They are the eldest of their siblings and a first generation Canadian, their father moving to Canada from Chile with their abuelita. Ben came out as a young person in high school at age 16. They were fortunate enough to have support at home while attending high school where Patti Rowley was a GSA advisor. At the same time, Ben attended Rainbow Coffee, a previous OUTSaskatoon youth program, when OUT was called the Avenue Community Centre. OUTSaskatoon has long been part of their personal queer lineage. Ben attended youth programming as a young person then became an employee as the Youth & Sexual Health Coordinator. They later left the role in 2020 due to both physical and mental health, exasperated by the Covid pandemic. Over the years, Ben has learnt how to balance life and health better and they are looking to connect with community in an authentic and supportive way. In addition to the connection they have fostered with OUT, Ben is also connected with BGC (formerly Boys and Girls Club) and work closely with youth in school programs. Additionally, they have previous experience with the Saskatoon branch of Camp fYrefly, years ago. Ben has always had drive to support young voices throughout their life. They always aim to provide not just a safer space for all people they encounter, but one that is also enjoyable, comfortable, and equal; where someone can be their authentic colourful selves. Ben has a strong background as a community advocate with experience facilitating 2SLGBTQIA+ programming, providing trauma-informed support, and delivering inclusive education. Ben is skilled in creating safer spaces, building trust with youth, and supporting identity development through compassion and advocacy.
